About Ernest Borel

Ernest Borel has long revelled in global recognition for its elegant timepieces that measure romantic moments. Founded in 1856 by a young Jules Borel, the brand is one of the oldest watchmakers of Neuchâtel, whose history spans over 150 years. From a small maison to its current footing as a romantic watchmaking brand that operates around the globe, Ernest Borel has invariably established its commitment to design excellence, craftsmanship, and innovation.

The journey of Ernest Borel began in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, when Jules Borel resolved to pursue a career in watchmaking and turn it into a global entity. He founded Borel and Courvoisier Company in 1859 and soon started selling its timepieces to watch stores in Germany, Italy, the UK, the US and even South America. In 1894, Ernest Borel, son of Jules Borel, took over the reins of the company, introducing many innovations and a new vision for the brand.

The maison’s now-famous logo of dancing lovers was conceptualised in 1898 when the young Ernest Borel was pictured by a photographer dancing with a lady at a party. The grace and elegance of the picture inspired him to trademark it as their logo, ushering in a new design philosophy for the brand, the Romantic Moments, that is still widely admired today.

Achievements & Accolades

A testimony to Ernest Borel’s story of success is the numerous awards it has garnered over the years. From Jules Borel receiving the First Prize of Similar Products by Neuchâtel Observatory and becoming a member of the Swiss Federal Council to Ernest Borel getting the Honorable Award of Grand Prix and being awarded the certificate of “Bulletin de marche” for 4,172 timepieces by C.O.S.C., winning accolades has always underpinned the brand’s legacy.

Furthermore, the brand has strategically expanded globally, with China emerging as its dominant market. While maintaining a stronghold in Switzerland, its exquisite timepieces grace wrists in the United States, France, Russia, Turkey, Ireland, Ukraine, and beyond. The brand's fusion of elegance and modernity resonates universally, leading them to have more than 1000 point-of-sales around the world by 2016. In 2014, the brand was officially listed on the Main Board of Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (“SEHK”) and in 2018 it was partially acquired by a subsidiary of Citychamp Watch & Jewellery Group Limited.

Ernest Borel: Watch Collections

Since the 1840s, the brand has created timepieces reinforced by a sense of elegance and grace, even before Romantic Moments became its design identity. One of the first collections introduced by the maison was Retro in 1938, designed by Adamir Debrot, Ernest Borel’s director of design at the time. The watch with a smooth round case and a clean, legible dial featuring the famous couple logo laid the groundwork for what was to come from this Swiss brand. One of the most popular Ernest Borel watches comes from the Cocktail collection, released in the 1940s. A line of women's watches, also including subtle unisex models, became an instant hit. It was marked by a feminine design with a unique time-telling function, and it still serves as a desirable Ernest Borel watch.

Ernest Borel boasts a wide range of timepieces, featuring a versatile catalogue of 20 primary watch collections. Its repertoire includes sophisticated dress watches from collections like Heritage, Cosmic, Heartful, and more, in addition to complex pieces from the Grandeur line and sports watches from Sage.
